Many of us as artists have spent a lot of time, whether it be in undergrad, graduate school, workshops, or through our own creative practices honing in on our research interests, artistic voices/choices, and modes of dissemination. However, there are far fewer containers committed to supporting what it actually takes to build a sustainable life as an artist. This five day workshop will lead participants through practical tools, techniques, and exercises designed to live a life committed to being an artist within the current economic, social, and political context. Aka-- the world is burning, and yet here I am in a studio trying to make something. Aka-- I'm trying to figure out how to pay my rent, survive capitalism, and yet here I am putting on a performance event. Aka-- I'm making just enough money to be able to take a workshop, a class, and buy performance tickets!
Together we read/write/talk about/write drafts/ give feedback on one another's grant applications, fundraising language, artist statements, audience engagement plans, and budgets. We will learn about and discuss the benefits/downsides of fiscal sponsorship/s-corp/501C3/LLC. And we will work to set up sustainable and achievable goals so that yo can build a financially and artistically sustainable life aligned with your values. Using texts such as: Making your life as an Artist, Dark Matter: Art & Politics in the age of Enterprise Culture, and The Artists' Guide: How to Make a Living Doing What you Love. This workshop is a condensed and professionalized version of the Dance Producing and Professional Development course I teach in the Dance Department at UC RIverside.
This workshop requires a short form to ensure a cohort of folks similarly invested in their art making practice.
